    Greetings!
    Dear Friend,
Welcome to the JHM Global Medical Missions!
Here are some questions and answers that will enable medical teams/volunteers access our programs.

Who can go on medical missions?
JHM GLOBAL MEDICAL welcomes missionaries & medical professionals such as:
Mobile medical Teams, Paediatricians, anaesthesiologists, surgeons (general, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic and GYN), and trained counsellors. We need optometrists, opticians, nurses of all descriptions, pharmacists, OR techs, dental hygienists, translators, lab technicians, fix-it people, physical therapists, health educators. We value dentists, family practitioners, emergency & internal medicine physicians.

We appreciate alternative medicine professionals also such as
Acupuncture Medicine, Accupresure Medicine, Chiropody/Podiatric Medicine, Chinese medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Homeopathic Medicine, Herbal medicine, Naturopathy, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, etc.

Volunteers are selected as they apply on the basis of medical training and past participation. We welcome prayer warriors, prayer helpers and general helpers with caring heart and experience.

Students studying: Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery, Optometry and other allied helth fields including Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Podiatry, Pre-Complementary Medicine, Pre Nusing, Pre-Pharmacy, and other Pre-Allied Health Careers, etc.

    Size of mission teams?
Mission teams can be small, medium or large. Advance planning is important to enable us to arrange adequate accommodations and medical facilities for the team. Knowing the number of attending surgeons, anaesthetists, family practice physicians, dentists, nurses, students, or techs, dental hygienists and general helpers well in advance will enable us to make suitable arrangements and plan the best geographical area to send the team. Speaking the local language not mandatory and interpreters are on hand to assist.

    When can I go?
Mission teams are welcomed all year round, but discussion with the mission team will help you avoid coming in the heaviest rainfall season. Mobile medical teams are often hindered by torrential rain, flood and muddy roads.

Is there a booking deadline to come on a medical mission?
There is no booking deadline but advanced planning is the key to effective mission visit/planning.

Most people come to the mission field with minimal amount of money since everything else has been paid for in advance.
Donations intended for supporting the work we do is best sent to us directly in advance using a bank transfer or similar transfer methods. Small amounts to spend on personal luxuries and for buying holidays gift is deemed adequate.

Not at all! We have embraced a policy of not charging patient fees especially the most broken and impoverished patients we serve. Donation of cash or gifts to the work is encouraged and welcomed. No needy or poor patient is turned away, ever!

Our work is funded through donations and proceeds realised from our various mission internships, books, merchandise, conferences and resources.

Minimum age to travel on medical missions?
Age 16+ [Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in all cases]

    About Passport Applications
Processing time for passports tend to be delayed at certain times and busy seasons, therefore allow sufficient processing time. Check with your local post office or passport agency for instructions on applying for a passport. Make photocopies of the picture page to tuck in your luggage and to leave with your family along with a copy of your travel itinerary. A belt-bag or fanny-pack keeps important documents more secure as you travel.

    Planning your trip ahead
There are ample information about your proposed destination on the internet. Remember also that your local library has information and perhaps travel videos about your destination. So get educated and get informed. There are useful links on our website also to help you.

    What to bring?
Make a list of your necessities and ensure you pack them without fail. Remember things like; Your stethoscope, Holy Bible, Spare eyeglasses, hat, routine prescriptions, mosquito repellent, extra towel, sheets, sun block, hand sanitizers, swimsuit. Dark, easily washable clothing is best. No flashy jewellery please! Travel in comfortable shoes. Perfumed toiletries attract insects. Toiletries will be expensive locally, if they are even available. Zip-lock bags keep things from leaking onto each other. Surgery and clinic supplies, equipment and non-expired medicines are carried by participants to specific projects, or shipped separately at your cost.

    How much Luggage
Please plan to pack in one suitcase and use the second bag or Rubbermaid trunk (with a lock) for supplies. Leave the trunk behind, if possible, for storage after the project. Your carry-on bag should include essentials in case your luggage does not arrive with you.

    What should I bring?
You may want to give a little gift to your translator, the or nurse, the bus driver, etc. Gather small 'thank you' gifts like toothpaste, pens, key chains, stickers, crayons, small shampoos, baseball caps, etc. You'll be glad you did. Clothes, sheets, shoes, and left over toiletries can be donated through local JHM Global at the end of the trip, leaving suitcase space for some of those souvenirs. We welcome extra batteries or other hard-to-get items. Remember: medicines and necessities take priority over toys when packing.

    What are the medicines needed?
Below is a list of basic medications that are needed on most projects. Avoid samples of unusual, sophisticated drugs. Please pack medicines in containers, not plastic bags, to keep them clean and uncrushed. List drug name, manufacturer, expiration date and number of containers. (You don't need to count pills). We cannot use expired medicines. Vitamins & iron (tabs & liquid) - adult, pediatric, prenatal
Analgesics - ASA, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, NSAIDS, muscle relaxants

    Expired Drugs
Expired drugs are not acceptable under any circumstances.

    Surgical supplies to bring:
Feel free to bring Caps, boots, scrubs, masks, gowns and sterile gloves... Drapes, sponges, prep sets, disposables, tape... We can re-sterilize suture packets and procedure trays. We always need manually operated lab equipment & lab supplies.

    Will I stay healthy?
The accommodation and facilities you will have access to are kept safe, clean and secured. The food and water we provide will be clean and safe. We suggest that you wash your hands with soap often. Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you.

    Immunisation Steps?
Review your immunizations and check with your physician about what is needed where you will be serving. Hepatitis B, for example, has to be given over several months. Avoid having injections the day before carrying suitcases through the airport.

    Getting others involved

We encourage people who can to help routinely collect toothbrushes, over-the-counter pain meds, adult and children's vitamins, ointments, and more through churches or youth clubs. If you make arrangements ahead of time, the airline may allow you to bring one non-motorized, collapsible wheelchair in addition to your routine luggage allowance. We can use wheelchairs in any quantity because the need is large. Non prescription eye glasses are also welcomed

    Vaccinations + Malaria Warning!
Please see your doctor for details and be sure that all your jabs are up to date. Anti-Malaria medications need to have started way before you come out. Please do due diligence..

    Travel Visa Process
Contact the relevant Embassy/consulate for the nation you have signed up with us. It is most advisable to secure your visa in advance that wait to obtain one on arrival. There may be delays and you may miss your flight/train connections.

How many hours will I work per day?
Your working hours will vary depending on the circuit and mobile mission to which you have been assigned. Early start to your day at 7:30am and late finishing at perhaps 9pm at night is not unusual on mobile medical missions.

    Sexual relationships/HIV warning
We strongly warn our participants NOT to get sexually involved with anyone on any mission trip except your spouse. HIV Aids is prevalent in the third world, so refrain from having any sex with strangers! Please Be warned!

Can I get Course Credits for my mission participation
We issue certificates of completion to all participants but college credits are only allocated in agreement with partner colleges or universities on internship assignments of not less that 4 weeks or 160 working hours.

    Accommodation types
Accommodations are typically in mission houses/hotels run by us with two people sharing a room. The house is nice, clean, with fresh running water and amenities for your convenience.

    Food quality/types
Breakfast is usually served with fresh milk, assorted cereal, fresh fruits, croissant, toast, eggs and bread, Marmalade, Jam & butter are also provided. Lunch where/when served is usually sandwiches. Evening meal may vary with some element of local ethnic cuisine provided. We serve meet, poultry, seafood & cater to vegetarians also.

Will you give us an orientation on arrival
Yes, we do! We always do mission briefing for all fresh arriving participants. We touch on what is expected of you, covering mission etiquette, protocols, security, mission schedule, food, team introduction, etc.

    Valuables
Please refrain from bringing personal valuables, expensive jewellery and such item of great value to the mission filed. Dress modest, wear inexpensive jewellery and attire. Display of wealth and riches is not encouraged whilst ministering to the poor and impoverished.

    24 Hours Support/Coordinator
We provide a 24 hours support service to you whilst you are out there with us. Your supervisor can/will assist you with personal or collective emergencies should one occur.

    Bringing children/Family
Young Children should not be brought on a mobile medical outreach. Travel conditions are not ideal for children. Exposure to disease conditions is high and child care facilities are not available. Our missions are adults only missions.

    Water Warning!
Drink only safe and bottled water provided by the mission. Bottle mineral water bought from the public places should be tamper free. If unsure do not consume.
